Filipina woes: The desire for lighter skin

Growing up in the Philippines meant that you were bombarded with images if  only one standard of beauty. This standard was light skin, "mestiza", long straight hair and skinny- medium frame. It really hasn't changed much over the years. Although, since the "F4" phase we slowly started digging the "chinitas". Now, mestiza or tisay really just means you are of mixed racial ancestry. Here, most people would use the term "tisay" to refer to girls who look like they could be mixed with European/Spanish  blood. "Chinita ", would be any girl with chinkier eyes/ monolid eyes.

Of course, every now and then we get the sexy, tanned., model/ actress/celebrity who will be praised for "staying true" to her skin color. A few years later, a name brand comes along and claims that they are the best in skin lightening because they were successful at making said model/actress/celebrity lighter. *Inset Pia Guanio's photo*. Now, I'm not bashing / hating on tanned/ dark skinned girls. I know a lot of girls that are already made fun of for that (including me when I was younger).

I grew up having the ultimate tan lines. Lol. My face, top of my arms and my neck area were all dark. My mom refers to them as my lost years. It was a phase when  I hated being in pictures. I looked like a 12 year old boy. I had short hair, acne, braces, super skinny body. Lol. But the skin on my legs and other hidden areas were all light. Sorta. Lol. But hey,I loved being out in the sun, being sweaty and smelling like a barn. Lol. So now that I'm light skinned, everyone swears I take glutathione. People I never talk to SWEAR that they're sure.Even my mom swears I take glutathione, even tho I don't live with her and she's never seen me take it.

What was the point of that story? I don't know. Just wanted to give you a lil background as to why I like to keep my skin light. I've experienced some sort of discrimination from everyone. It's like this.

People when I was younger: " Ewww, you're so dark. It's not good for a girl to be dark"
People when I lived in the States: " Girl, your are so white! Go get a tan! Black/ Brown is beautiful"
People when I went back to the Philippines (same people from when I was younger) : "It's not good to be light skinned! You have to be natural."( YEA, natural. Cos I was born black like MJ and I just happened to get this light with papaya soap.Haha.)

Anyways, that was a lil background story as to why I prefer being light skinned.  I tan whenever I feel like it but don't really do it as much because the sun can really do some damage. As much as some girls are proud that they love to tan...sorry girls but sun= sun spots+wrinkles+skin cancer. I know a lot of my American friends rag on me because I'm light and they say I'm trying to change my color (and yet they tan like crazy).
FYI  I can get light even if I don't use whitening soap. They can't get a tan if they stopped going to the beach for a few days.I wasn't even born tan?Lol.

Moral of the story? I live to please myself!Haha. Not in a destructive, party every night, steal everyone's candy kind of life. Just the kind where you work on things you think you need to improve on. Do the things that can make you happy. My happiness means working out for a sexy body, changing my hair color often (lol), having light skin and getting rich. Someone out there is gonna give you crap for having curly hair or brown eyes or being pear shaped. Don't listen to them! Also, don't stay where you are! Don't live a life where you're not constantly improving. If you want to lose weight, lose some weight. Do it in a healthy way. Want to dye your hair? Go  for it. Because if you're not happy with yourself. You'll prolly end up a hater and will start posting nasty things on here. Go be happy and forget the time your ex bf traded you in for a mestiza ;)
